Northern California Trip Info

Hello families!  We are a little over a week away from our 8th Grade Trip!  Below is some important information:

• All money is due for basic trip.  Optional activities can be paid later, however, I need a final count for white water rafting and rappelling now.  Please respond to the email our room parent sent out if your son or daughter or chaperone is participating in either of those activities. Space is limited and they may not be able to accommodate students who want to participate last minute. The zipline activity is much more flexible with last minute participants.
• Please look at the "Shared items list" HERE to sign up to bring supplies and food items for the group. Items include camping supplies and food items prepared before we leave.  
• All students are asked to bring one package of lunchmeat or cheese to be shared.

Monday, May 11:  All camp supplies, and sleeping bags will be brought to Lisa's classroom.

Tuesday, May 12:  All suitcases will be brought to Lisa's classroom.

Wednesday, May 13: 

• 7:30 am Arrive at school fed with a sack lunch, backpack, pillow.  These items will stay with them at their seat.
• Prepared food items  and lunchmeat/cheese will be dropped of at parking lot in designated area. 
• Suitcases and camp supplies will be packed in cars beforehand, so it is possible students will not be in the same car as their clothes and sleeping bags.  
• ****Check in with Lisa or Elise before leaving your child to turn in any medication, hand over spending money(if you would rather Lisa hold it), and make sure all forms have been turned in,

Last week's UCSD tour

This week's events:
Please note- Friday field trip to the Kroc Center is postponed until further notice
Thursday May 7: IA Art Experience 5pm (see IA website or listen to all school call for details)
Friday May 8: Design your High School final model and brochure due
Monday May 11: Mission Valley/ Mission Gorge Field Trip $1.50 transit cost.  We will take the bus from Mira Mesa Blvd to Mission Valley old IA site, then trolley to Mission Gorge Site. I would love a couple chaperones or parents who can shuttle kids from school to bus stop in the morning and again when we return.

 We are in the last leg of the year!  This week we will finish state testing!  Each morning, students will have 1 hour of testing.  Our schedule has been quite confusing because of this, so it will be nice to get back into a routine.

For those students not going on the trip, Cynthia will be with students not going on the trip every day we are gone to help them complete work.  A trip packet will be available next Wednesday, May 13

•  Knave (nayv) Noun: A dishonest, deceitful person.

-Just a forewarning about John’s knave personality, because I care about you and don’t want you getting hurt. 

• Neophyte (NEE-uh-fahyt) Noun: A beginner; A religious novice; A new convert to a religion or belief.

-Sally wasn’t too sure about life, she had many questions, so decided to neophyte into a new religion. 

•   Ornate (AHR-neyt) Adjective: Excessively decorated; elaborate; showy; Embellished with elaborate or

flowery style.

-Steve’s wife was known for her ornate interior design, many would come over just to see.

• 4.     Panorama (pan-uh-RAM-uh) Noun: An unobstructed view in all directions; An image of a scene or landscape which is unrolled continuously for spectators and exhibited one part at a time; A complete and comprehensive survey of a topic.

-You have to get a panorama view of the ocean, it looks amazing from here!

• 5.     Voracious (voh-REY-shuhs) Adjective: Having an appetite for large amounts of food; Overeager; avid.

-Wilbur will not settle for two bowls a day, he seems to have a voracious appetite. 

• 6.     Xenophobia (zee-nuh-FOH-bee-uh) Noun: Fear or dislike of any person or thing that is strange or foreign.

-I couldn’t get my cousin to travel with me to South American, she is such a xenophobic.

Don’t forget to study----Last week grades consisted of only 5’s and 6’s…let’s keep that going. Hard work pays off.

Also, don’t forget to utilize vocabulary words in this upcoming research assignment. 

Calendar update

Can you believe it? As April comes to an end, we are in the last leg of the school year!  It has flown by. Many things are happening between now and June 12 so please take note.

        The words chuckle, fickle, and kick are consonant with one and other due to the                     existence of common interior consonant sounds (/ck/).

2.  Euphemism: use of a less direct, less offensive word or phrase

Instead of using a derogatory term in her paper, Natalie decided to replace it with euphemism.

3.  Invocation: calling upon a divine power for aid. Many poems begin with an invocation asking for inspiration

The young lad made an invocation when he realized his father’s health was not improving.

4.  Jargon: language of a trade or profession

Last night’s meeting sounded like a bunch of jargon.

5.  Satire: a literary tone used to ridicule or make fun of human vice or weakness, often with the intent of correcting, or changing the way things are.

All the students knew about Jenny’s satire, which is why they avoided having a conversation with her.

6.  Soliloquy: in drama, a speech in which character does not address others, but rather speaks aloud to himself

Her morning was filled with such soliloquy, one would have thought she had company over.
